Review: Apollo 13

When this movie came out I saw it in the theater and was blown away. I still remember the feeling of exhilaration I had during the launch sequence, and the panic of the tense fight for control during the last burn to reaquire the re-entry window as the Earth careened in and out of view. And, though I knew the ending before I went in, I remember the feeling of relief as the parachutes opened . . . → Read More: Review: Apollo 13

Review: Superman: Max Fleisher cartoon shorts

In 1941 and 1942, Superman showed up in some great Max Fleisher cartoons. I just picked up a Volume 1 DVD at the Dollar Store and it was a bargain.

These old cartoons are great. In some ways I thought they were superior to our current cartoons. Certainly the lighting and shading of these classics are more dramatic and cinematic. The characters also look more like real humans than today’s typical animations. They even take . . . → Read More: Review: Superman: Max Fleisher cartoon shorts

Star Wars fanatacism

TheForce.Net – Latest News – Number One Star Wars Fan In The UK

I really like Star Wars a lot. I’ve spent way too much money and time on it over the years to quantify. But I can now say that Luke Skywalker scares me.

Review: Doctor Who 2005 & 2006 seasons

First, the confession: I’ve been a Doctor Who fan since I was about 8 years old. Sitting and watching those episodes (Tom Baker, at the time) with my Dad is a great memory for me.

I started to lose interest in the Colin Baker years and didn’t watch Sylvester McCoy much either. Apparently neither did anyone else, and they shut the show down in 1989.

But they finally revived it in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston . . . → Read More: Review: Doctor Who 2005 & 2006 seasons

Review: Kingdom of Heaven

Set in the 12th century Crusades and the defense of Jerusalem, this movie should have been one I loved. The crew took pains to ensure an accurate portrayal of the period, including clothing and battle tactics. The story was based on real life events. The politics were also real (though an amalgam of real events). It had a good share of action. And yet, the movie came out average.

The main character, Balian (Orlando Bloom), . . . → Read More: Review: Kingdom of Heaven

Bryce Zabel’s Superman Smackdown

FOR WHAT IT’S WORTH | Bryce Zabel: Superman Returns (2006) vs Superman: The Movie (1978)

Here’s a great review of Superman Returns in comparison with the original Superman movie (I love Bryce’s new concept in movie reviews).

I agree with him on just about everything, but I think my decision would have come down in a very close call for the 1978 film. Yes, it was less real, but it held more emotion for me.

Review: Superman Returns :: Spoilers!!

This is a follow-up to my previous, spoiler-free post. I have a few observations about continuity problems in Superman Returns. Spoilers below! If you want to read it, take your mouse and click & drag from here until the end of the post.

In Superman II, Lois and Clark sleep together. In this movie Lois has a son, Jason, who is presumably five years old and who turns out to be Superman’s son. However, she . . . → Read More: Review: Superman Returns :: Spoilers!!

Review: Superman Returns

Superman is back.

Lex Luthor is back, too.

It’s really good.

But is it a triumph?

First, a little explanation: This movie is a sequel/restart. Back in the seventies and eighties, Christopher Reeve (who for many is Superman) starred in four Superman movies. The first, his origin and first meeting with Lex Luthor, and the second, his battle with three Kryptonian escaped convicts, were the only two well-received movies in the series. The current movie . . . → Read More: Review: Superman Returns
