I don’t know what the ratings were last season, but I’d bet BG had higher numbers than either SG. Sci-Fi probably looked at BG vs. SG-1 and thought the former had more life left in it than the latter, and if you’re going to throw increasing amounts of money at something, toss it to the breadwinner.

I'll take that action. Put me down for five (ie., a nickel):)

I think the show had run its course and everyone thought it best to leave on a high note. Or at least while people are still interested. Ending the TV show now makes it easier to create a Stargate movie. Soon we will see the fans start petitions and such to 'save' the show. The creators of Stargate will then will subsume these fan efforts as they schmooze and cajole to the Hollywood elite.

It's brillant I tell ya!

Yeah, there were clues that it would be cancelled - in fact, Sci-Fi said a week or two ago that the only way to save the show would be to watch it live - but I thought at a minimum we wouldn't hear of cancellation until the second half of the season.

Atlantis' stories are improving, so I'm glad that it's been picked up, but I think you're right that it has a limited life left without its lead-in.

BG definitely became popular in part due to its lead-ins, but I think it has taken over as Sci-Fi's flagship show.
I am especially surprised that this is happening as well. Although, I knew the ratings for the show had been declining - I thought it had enough of a following to continue at least for 2 or 3 more seasons.

One thing that surprises me more, is that Stargate Atlantis is supposedly doing better in ratings than SG-1. I watch and like Atlantis, but did not think it yet had the following as that of SG-1.

If I had to guess - if SG-1 is actually done after this season, I predict that Atlantis only has 2 more seasons before they are cancelled.

I believe that Battlestar Galactica is as strong as it is, because of the Stargate shows - due to lead ins they carried. It will be interesting to see how Battlestar does this fall without the Stargate lead ins.
