Shop Ahead

Here’s a tip from my sister-in-law. Pretty impressive savings.

This is the perfect time to shop for next year’s winter clothes. We shop at department stores like Macy’s and Sears and pay a fraction of the regular cost. The sale is anywhere from 50-70% off. [My daughter's] clothes were about $60 and the regular cost was $200. Don’t forget about PJ’s, Carters has theirs on sale for $6.99.

If you have young kids, you know they’re outgrowing their clothes as you read this. With a little planning ahead, you can save a bundle.

It’s a good idea, but it can also end up being a waste of money if you can’t reasonably predict what size your child will be the next year. My son, who is only two years old right now, is in 4T shirts, but 3T pants. There is no way we could have predicted those sizes last winter. If we would have bought sizes according to his age, we’d have stocked up on 2T shirts and pants, all of which would have been way too small by the time winter hit. The idea may work for older kids, though, when you have a better idea of their growth spurts.

  • Not surprisingly, since our kids are similar in age, that’s the same comment my wife made when she saw this post.

Since she’s the one doing the clothes shopping, guess who gets to make the decision about whether we try this…
