By Jeff, on January 17th, 2007 33 Names of Things You Never Knew had Names – Words – Book of Lists – Canongate Home
This is a pretty cool little list. Nice to pull out some of these at a cocktail party…

By Jeff, on January 15th, 2007 The Simple Dollar » The Money Savvy Pig and My Son’s Allowance
Another good idea from Trent, over at The Simple Dollar. A transparent, compartmentalized, piggybank does seem like a good way to teach money management to young kids. His plan hits the major keys of teaching: Tell, Show, Do, Review.
Obviously he’ll have to tell his son what he’s doing. Then he will show him what it looks like as the savings build. Though . . . → Read More: Teaching money management to kids
By Jeff, on January 14th, 2007 G-Ding.TV | Viewing Linux in a whole new way
For the cost of basic hardware you can have a PVR (Personal Video Recorder, e.g., TIVO) in your house. You can even use an old computer (maybe go get a bigger hard drive, and a TV Tuner card if you don’t already have one), to save even more money.
This is nothing new, really. MythTV (the PVR software) has been around for a while. Linux (the . . . → Read More: Almost free TV / PVR
By Jeff, on January 14th, 2007 [update: I've since started using the Anarchy plugin, which also makes standard hyperlinks playable, and though I'm on the fence about which technology I like better for audio (I got Anarchy for the video component), I lean toward the method described below because it's less visually intrusive. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to disable the Anarchy audio player segment without disabling the whole thing, so all the example links below (and throughout this site . . . → Read More: Making MP3s playable on a website, the easy way
By Jeff, on January 12th, 2007 The Simple Dollar » Live Free: Seven Pieces Of Open Source Software That Transformed My Life
Okay, “life transforming” might be a little extreme … but then again I haven’t tried most of them yet.
I have tried GAIM, and I like it. I use Firefox, Thunderbird and (obviously) WordPress on a daily basis (though I haven’t heard of most of the extensions he mentioned).
I loaded Open Office once, but I had a really . . . → Read More: Life Transforming Open Source Software
By Jeff, on January 8th, 2007 I just caught up on my JMSNews reading and found a few items I thought I’d point out.
First, we have a tentative release time for Babylon 5: The Lost Tales (which I previously posted about in more detail): they’re shooting for a release during the week of July 27th.
For those into seriously trivial information about JMS, he also released a list of his entire video/DVD collection. I didn’t read through the whole list, . . . → Read More: Babylon 5 / JMS updates
By Jeff, on January 7th, 2007 I knew a few phrases from maybe 3 or 4 Johnny Cash songs before I saw this movie. I knew he had gone to prison (though I wasn’t sure why), and that he married June Carter. I also was pretty sure he was a Christian by the end of his life and that he wore black all the time. Other than that, I went into this biopic with no idea at all what to expect.

By Jeff, on January 2nd, 2007 Well, here’s my first post of 2007. I’m going to start off with a gripe.
To paraphrase Peter, Paul, and Mary: “Where has all the QA gone?”
Quality Assurance is an essential part of any development project, no matter the industry. If you don’t have someone check the final product before you ship it out the door, how do you know it’s any good? What if some minor flaw was introduced somewhere in the process . . . → Read More: QA – Quality Assurance or Questionable Assurance?
