Customize your WinXP Control Panel

Computer Tips For Everybody » Blog Archive » Create a custom Control Panel in Windows XP
This is a timely tip for me, as I just received a new laptop with WinXP on it at work, and I’m trying to reaquaint myself with the little tweaks that aid in productivity. I’d probably opt for just turning on the setting that makes the Control Panel appear as a menu rather than in a new window, but this is a handy alternative to have in my back pocket. It also helps for those of us who keep initially going to the Programs menu to find the Control Panel, rather than the Settings menu, just out of habit (I mean, everything else I use is under Programs…).

Look out for the edge!? What edge?

Newsflash: Time May Not Exist | Physics & Math | DISCOVER Magazine

Every once in a while I read articles like this to remind myself that there is a lot that can’t be explained in this world, and much of what we experience isn’t as concrete as we like to think. Here’s a good quote from the article:

…the thing we experience as time might emerge from a more fundamental, timeless reality. As Rovelli describes it, “Time may be an approximate concept that emerges at large scales—a bit like the concept of ‘surface of the water,’ which makes sense macroscopically but which loses a precise sense at the level of the atoms.”

That is one of the best analogies I’ve seen. I can actually picture a camera zooming in on a drop of water, magnifying the “edge,” moving through an increasingly foggy reality until we see no distinction between the water and the surrounding air: just distances between atoms, indistinguishable from each other. This is why physics is so cool. Forget about the “time doesn’t exist” idea…. there’s no such thing as an edge! And we walk around like we understand reality….

Thrilling times for Filipino cons

1500 Filipino Inmates Do Thriller - ectoplasmosis

There is something disturbing about that guy playing “Michael Jackson’s” girlfriend… actually there’s something disturbing about the whole thing, but I just can’t stop watching it.

Can you imagine being the guy who came up with this idea, and presenting it to the warden?

Idea guy: Okay, look, I know the pie-eating contest didn’t go so well. Who knew the aluminum pie plates could be used as weapons? Seriously, I don’t think anyone saw that coming.
Warden: Don’t talk to me about that. I’m still trying to forget about the biathalon!
Idea guy: Well, the biathalon was just poorly conceived, I grant you that. But this time I’ve got it! Something that can really make use of all that space we have in the yard, and no one will feel left out like Catacutan did when we had the bikini contest (that waxing accident was so unfortunate). We get everyone together and have them act like zombies! Most of them will just stand around and wave their arms, but we’ll have some of them dance! And oh, we can let Catacutan dress up and pretend to be attacked by everyone! He’ll love that… it’ll be great!
Warden: Whatever. But if I let you do this, you have to stop making plans for the Sound of Music revival.
Idea guy: Oh… well, we just got started on the costumes for the nuns

Review: Doctor Who 2007

Last year, I reviewed the first two seasons of the revived Doctor Who series. At the time, I said the second season finale out-did the first’s, and that was a feat. Does the third season finale trump the second’s?

Before I answer that, let’s go on a quick retrospective of the third season. In the Christmas special and the early episodes, the Doctor was dealing with the ‘loss’ of Rose. They laid it on a bit thick from time to time, but whatever. As the season continued he grew to respect Martha, and the episodes went from entertaining to totally engrossing. Seriously, the first episodes were good, but from “Human Nature” onward, there was no contest: Season Three is the season to beat. Even “Blink,” the episode with almost no appearance by the Doctor, usually one of the weakest episodes, was amazingly good. In fact, I’d rate that one as one of my favorites (here’s a good review).

So the season itself was a winner. Was the finale? Well, it was really a three-parter. Part one blew me away (after some slow pacing in the beginning). Part two was excellent. Part three, the actual finale, was amazing at times, but faltered here and there, which was pretty disappointing. One review summed it up very well:

The final half of the story almost redeems the episode as whole. For one thing, as pay-offs to season-long story arcs come into play, it actually feels natural and not forced. Davies [writer/executive producer] even goes so far as to give some payoffs to story arcs from the entire series, making the final half of the story feel like he’s saying farewell to the series and is stepping aside. And I will give the script credit — for the most part, I like the way all the pay-offs play out.

Overall, I’d say it was good. It had its problems, but I enjoyed it. The big reveal about Jack is one thing that took me completely by surprise, and I loved it. That really made me want to go back and watch a few episodes over again.

It seems like there’s a big heartache in every season finale of this show. I realize it makes for great drama (obviously I love the episodes), but maybe they could figure out a way to make it just as compelling next year with nothing but happiness at the end.

The don’t miss episodes of this season? Simple list:

  • Human Nature
  • Everything after it

Honorable mention goes to “Gridlock” for being a good episode, but mostly for having an absolutely critical scene at the end that impacts the full season story (and the series’ story, for that matter).

Posture - it’s not just for prep schools

The ergonomics guys at work are gonna love me for posting this (if they ever hear about it).

Dumb Little Man posted an article about fixing your posture to improve your overall health: 7 Postural Habits To Make Now To Increase Your Health

Here’s one piece I had never heard before:

4. Weight on Your Heels. Never put the weight on your toes: it’s bad for the knees. Put the weight on your heels when:
Climbing stairways
Walking around
Sitting on a chair
Curl your toes up if you have problems keeping your heels on the floor.

A child’s view of computer repair

When I returned from my vacation yesterday, my computer would not recover from hibernation mode (i.e., it wouldn’t turn on). I went into a local computer store today to ask a couple questions and my wife and kids stayed in the car. Apparently my wife was explaining to my 2-year old why I was in the store, because when I came out, my daughter asked if my “proputer” was broken. After I confirmed it was, she was quiet while my wife and I talked about the rest of the day.

Then, in a quiet moment, my daughter said seriously, “Do you have some tape?” I was completely puzzled by that apparent non-sequitor, but my wife clarified that she meant tape to fix my computer, like we would use to fix one of her toys! When we said that was a good idea, but this couldn’t be fixed with tape, she said, “Oh,” and looked a little disappointed.

She put a smile on my face while I was getting more depressed about the state of my primary computer.

I love my kids (and I wish this problem was fixed so easily).
