Review: The Bourne Ultimatum

Jason Bourne is at it again. Chasing down his past and removing people who get in his way with some amazing hand-to-hand take downs.

The Bourne Ultimatum picks up right where the Bourne Supremacy left off - in Moscow, escaping from the cops with a wounded leg. From there it crosses Europe multiple times before landing in the US for the finale.

For my money, the first half of this movie outshone the second half. The best bits were the bus/train terminal and the chase through the buildings in Madrid. The rest of the movie was really good, but it started to feel like I’d seen some of the scenes already in the Bourne Identity and Bourne Supremacy. The Bourne vs. “the asset” fight in Madrid and the Bourne vs. “the other asset” car chase, especially, both felt lifted from Supremacy. Also, as with Supremacy, I didn’t like the style of filming the action sequences in that tight, hand-held camera format. It really made it much harder to discern what was going on (though Ultimatum did do a better job).

I thought the ending was a bit anti-climactic, as well. It was totally in keeping with the character and evolving story - it was the right ending to have - but it didn’t give me as much of a sense of resolution and justice as I was hoping for at the end of the trilogy.

Still, I think it was a good movie. If you can only see one of the trilogy, though, make it the first one (Identity).
