Writer’s Blog: Striking Writers Head to Capitol Hill

Writer’s Blog: Striking Writers Head to Capitol Hill

The writer’s strike continues, though negotiations have started once again. Meanwhile, the writers went and had a mock debate in Washington D.C. to raise awareness. Seems like it was pretty funny…

– On the writers strike: “It would cost Paramount a total of $4.6 million to give the writers everything they’re asking for. That’s half the amount it would take to get Reese Witherspoon into a movie. Now, I ask you, what’s more important to a movie: a script or half of Reese Witherspoon?” Another of the writers quipped: “Which half?”

Stephen Colbert found hung between bathrooms

Comcast.net TV - Colbert Raises $171,000 for Charity

Okay, it’s cool that he raised that much money, and it’s funny how he did it, but this is what I love:

Since returning from the writers strike without his writing staff, [Stephen] Colbert has managed to get a portrait of himself hung at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C., where it will hang between the bathrooms and near the “Americas Presidents” exhibit for about five more weeks.

The guy kills me…

Some people have REALLY short fuses

Why Religion is an Important Part of Personal Finance ∞ Get Rich Slowly

The topic of the linked post has (almost) nothing to do with my post here. It’s the comments that I want to point out. Here’s a synopsis of the situation:

Get Rich Slowly is a personal finance blog (and a pretty good one… I’d encourage you to subscribe). Some months ago, JD, the author, went on vacation and had some guest posters fill in for him. One of those authors (from the FreeMoneyFinance site… another decent personal finance blog) stated his views on the way your religious beliefs (focusing on Christianity, since he is a Christian) can inform and guide your approach to personal finance. The article itself makes it clear that JD not only didn’t write the post, but believes that religion has no bearing on personal finance. To my knowledge, it’s the only post on the site that even mentions religion.

All well and good… JD made his position known and allowed a counterpoint article to appear on his site.

We all know religion is a hot-button issue. I expected to see some mocking comments below the post, and some mocking replies. What surprised me were the people who got truly upset - including people who immediately jumped out and unsubscribed from the feed, citing this post as the sole reason in an otherwise perfect blog. Wow… that’s pretty sensitive. If you’re jumping ship because a guest poster writes one post that you disagree with, however vehemently, and you’re cool with every other item on the site, you have got an incredibly thin skin. As one commenter noted, that rounds off to 0.0% of the posts that you find offensive.

Seems a bit disingenuous of those same people to proclaim themselves to be the ones basing their life decisions on rational thought.

Fair Use

A few posts back, we got into a bit of a discussion that significantly hinged on fair use. I mentioned that I had a fair use reference but didn’t have it handy. Here it is:

And here’s something similar but shorter (though not as good):

Neither really change the argument we were having much, but I thought I’d at least follow through with my reference.

Plus, they’re just fun to watch!

Job Search via RSS

Official Google Reader Blog: There’s a feed for that?!

I’ve never actually used Craig’s List, but the article linked above points out that you can use feeds from that site and others to help you in a job search. It also has some other uses for feed readers that may not be immediately obvious to some people.

While I don’t use Craig’s List, I do have the feed from my ASTD job search coming to my feed reader. That’s very targeted to the industry I’m looking for… but it’s a good idea use whatever services make sense for you.

Basically, if you do searches frequently and the site you use has a feed option… why not use it?

What calibur is your lightsaber?

Star Wars: Gaming | Swords and Lightsabers Clash in Soulcalibur IV

(Wow, that’s a weak post title … sorry)

Go to the link above for a news release and trailer for a cross-over from Star Wars to head-to-head battle game SoulCalibur 4.

I have a hard time getting the trailers to run smooth off the Star Wars site for some reason… lots of jumpiness… so if you’d rather see it smoother, try this page (though you’ll have to either watch two trailers or drag to the middle of the movie - for some reason they put in two trailers back to back, and the second one is the relevant one).

Free Music & sound effects for podcasts

Free Royalty Free Music Loops, Free Royalty Free Sound Effects

A couple months ago we completed the first four podcasts our company has produced, for internal training purposes. I’ve mentioned previously some of the testing we did to get them produced, and I’ll probably go into more detail in the future on what process we ended up with and how we intend to move forward. For now, I just want to point out one aspect that took us longer to agree on than I anticipated: music.

Music tastes are really subjective, so it can be hard to get people to agree on what to use. There were only two of us that had to agree, so it could have been worse, but we were trying to find something that wasn’t too intrusive, that we could use repeatedly across different podcasts (a theme, basically), and that wouldn’t drive people nuts when looped. Each of us grabbed our favorite examples off the web and we put them up to a vote. I chose mine from Partners In Rhyme (who have a pretty good selection, IMO - I’m considering getting one of their CDs). My co-worker got hers from the audio section of Microsoft’s Clip Art site. I also just found this site, off the MS site. All have some good stuff.

All of these sites let you hear samples (they’d be dumb not to), and all contain Royalty Free music, which is important if you don’t want to break the law or pay a lot of money. The PIR site has pre-made loops - the MS site is a crap shoot in that department. The link at the top of the post here takes you to a page on the PIR site where you can get free Royalty Free loops, which is nice. The MS site is all free, but you may have to make your own loop out of it (which I ended up doing, and it took forever to get it to sound smooth). You also have to watch that you’re getting the right audio format; stay away from MIDI unless you’re willing to download a separate tool to convert that to WAV or MP3, or some other usable format.

We ended up with a sort of soft “hold music” kind of loop that had just a bit of a future newsroom feel to it (at least that’s how I thought of it) that complimented my co-worker’s voice very nicely.

Does anybody know of any other sources of free music loops? Please share! Post any you know about in the comments.

[Update: found two more sites that are promising:  This one has free loops, and this one has one free score a month (though it looks like an ad banner on the site).]

TV online - legally

Afternoons with Amit: How to watch TV online…legally

See, that’s the kicker - doing it legally. Anyone can find illegal TV. Given the option, though, I’d much rather support the companies creating these shows by going the legal route. If that means I have to put up with four 30-second commercials, I’m okay with that. Just don’t skimp on the quality, and make it easy to navigate.

Amit puts a description of each along with his preferences, but here’s the basic list:

That’s it for his list. If anyone knows of other free, legal outlets for TV shows online, post a link.

Bad parenting confessions

finslippy: Give me your worst parenting stories

[Found through ParentHacks]

Holy cow, this is the funniest and saddest thing I have read or seen in the last year. It’s a good thing I’m alone, because the howling laughter at times would have freaked everyone out. I couldn’t see the screen because of the tears from laughing so hard at times.

The blogger asks for the worst parenting stories to help her get over screaming at her own kids. She got back a huge response, and many of them are well written, too. Seems that a lot of parents screw up. Shocking.

Here is just one of the posts:

I’ve only been a mom for 11 months, so I’m pretty new to crappy parenthood, but I’ve had a few bad situations in this short period of time. The most recent was a few weeks ago. My daughter has just learned how to walk and naturally it follows that she is interested in ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING she shouldn’t be. When I was making dinner she followed me into the kitchen and while I made sure to install cabinet locks a few weeks prior, I did not install locks on the silverware drawers, foolishly believing that she couldn’t reach them. Apparently she can reach everything, even things that appear to be 17 feet above her head because she reached up and grabbed the drawer handle, which caused the drawer to go flying open for some reason, smashing my daughter in the forehead, which knocked her down onto the kitchen floor as steak knives flew through the air and gently landed around her like freshly fallen snow (she was fine).

10 minutes later she’s still in the kitchen with me (BECAUSE I DON’T LEARN) and I realize she was being awfully quiet (BECAUSE I DON’T LEARN) and I look over and she’s eaten the entire contents of the cat’s food bowl (Iams Weight Control, for those interested).

My husband now watches her while I make dinner. Because I am clearly incapable of keeping my child alive while doing so.

I’ll add my “favorite” stupid explosion of my own:

I was helping my 2-year old (at the time) brush her teeth. She was sitting on the sink and we were having a pleasant experience, mostly, until I told her to say “eeee” so I could brush the front of her teeth. She just sort of let her mouth go slack and decided this would be a good time to test how serious I was about getting her teeth brushed. I don’t know why (she was 2… even she probably didn’t know why). After some “ha ha, come on, say ‘eeee’” kind of talk escalated into “stop screwing around and go ‘EEEEEE’”, and she got progressively less willing to cooperate, I slammed my fist, and the toothbrush, down on the sink as hard as I possibly could, rattling everything in the room, making her paralyzed with fear while yelling at the top of my lungs something to the effect of “WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?!” At that point, she was wailing and inconsolable, and my wife kicked me out of the bathroom. Apparently, I have some anger issues. While it’s not gotten quite that bad since, it’s come close more than once. She still seems to like me though, and the guilt will fade, I’m sure, some time before I die.

It looks like most of the comments on the linked site are from mothers. I’d be interested to hear about major screw-ups from fathers, too. I think, maybe because kids spend more time with their mothers, that fathers’ interactions can be more impactful at times - which isn’t always helpful.
