Personal Finance advice from “Dilbert”

Vanguard − The “Dilbert” guide to personal finance

This list from Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert, is about 2 years old, but I just saw it for the first time, and I think it’s an excellent distillation of the basics of personal finance. It really focuses in on exactly what I’ve been reading about in the couple of years that I’ve been getting more serious about personal finance.

Pre-prequel-era Star Wars music tribute

John Williams is probably the most well known film composer in history. He owes much of that success to the Star Wars series, but Jaws, Superman, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Raiders of the Lost Ark* are just some of the other landmark soundtracks of his early career.

As the Star Wars prequel era was about to launch with Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace, a comedy singing group . . . → Read More: Pre-prequel-era Star Wars music tribute

Are all 3-year-olds like this?

It’s 2am. I’m finally about to go to sleep. Before I can get into the bedroom, though, I hear my daughter whimpering in her bed. Usually, this means she has to go to the bathroom, but not always. So I go in and nicely ask what’s wrong, at which point she thrashes a bit before settling her face into the bedsheets and making what to untrained ears would be a moan. I know what she’s . . . → Read More: Are all 3-year-olds like this?

What’s your wish for today?

Traveling across the ‘net as part of this commentluv contest, I ran across this really interesting site that went around to different cities asking 50 random people on the street: “What do you wish to have happen by the end of the day?” Then they edited together the video and here it is:

Fifty People, One Question: New York from Crush & Lovely on Vimeo.

Such a great, simple idea. Just a tiny peek . . . → Read More: What’s your wish for today?

Why I don’t have a dog

I don’t have a pet. Dog, cat, fish, bird, rock… nothing. That’s not likely to change in the next 5-7 years, if ever. There are lots of reasons, actually, but here are the three primary “excuses”:

I can’t afford it

According to Glblguy in his post, Don’t buy a dog, given an average lifespan of 12 years, the cost for a dog works out to $7,210.00 ($775 for the first year, then $585/year for 11 . . . → Read More: Why I don’t have a dog

Will you win?

For the first time ever, this blog is involved in a contest. This isn’t like a “who’s got the best blog” kind of thing, but one that gives you the chance to win a prize. I know, I know… that’s mighty nice of me, isn’t it?

Well, to be honest, I’m not really the man behind the curtain on this one. The contest is actually being run by Andy over at commentluv.com. That’s one of . . . → Read More: Will you win?

Hanging out with triplets can be a headache

Three is one better than two, right?

Well, it may sound glamorous, but they’re giving me a headache.

See, it just doesn’t add up. And things need to add up. I’m trying to fit three of them into a space designed for two, and I just can’t get it to work.

I need someone to explain the math.

In music, everything is very orderly. You have a certain number of beats in a measure. Most . . . → Read More: Hanging out with triplets can be a headache
