Aquaman.
Of all the Justice League characters, he is perhaps the most ignored. The most ridiculed.
To be fair, he talks to fish. Some ridicule is to be expected. And really, put him up against Batman and Superman and something seems to be … lacking.
This is my new favorite superhero-related song (or see the YouTube version):
Aquamans Lament – Mark Aaron James
I never really read any Aquaman comics. All I know of him is from TV, and a smattering of guest appearances in other comics.
My first exposure to him was in the ’70s in the Superfriends cartoon. It was hard to take him seriously… but then that could be said of most characters as portrayed in that cartoon. (I only need one word to demonstrate that: Gleek. If you’ve seen the show and that doesn’t conjure up images of cheesiness in your mind, there’s something wrong with your cheese-detector.)
The most recent TV appearances have been on Smallville, and then in the aborted Aquaman TV show, Mercy Reef [my review]. They started to build a decent character there. I’m actually a little disappointed Mercy Reef didn’t get aired. It coulda been good.
But in between Superfriends and Smallville, there was Justice League (and JL Unlimited [my review]). This is from his first appearance on the show. It shows where he’ll go.
That scene gave me a new respect for Aquaman. The Aquaman in that show was hard-core. He was in a perpetual state of “keep out of my business or I’ll gut you.” But in a nice way… sort of.

Aquaman (Alex Ross version)
Still… there’s something a little fishy about him. (sorry)
Show some love for Aquaman in the comments!

I can’t say I have a strong opinion about Aquaman one way or the other. Growing up, I got most of my superhero goodness from the actual comic books rather than from TV (mainly because closed captioning was not yet prevalent) and I do not remember him ever being featured in a comic book that I read.
However, I did find this hilarious (caution, profanity): http://www.mcsweeneys.net/2006/10/16weldon.html

heh.. that’s funny.
If you get a chance to see the Justice League show, I’d encourage you to give it a shot. I’d imagine the DVDs are closed captioned. Good stuff.

Aquaman was my favorite on Superfriends! (But, I always wanted a pet dolphin—his superpower would have come in handy in a “talking to dolphins” capacity).
They’ve revamped him a bit recently on the cartoon series, “Batman: The Bold and the Brave”. He is sort of like a crazy, underwater Renaissance Festival king….here is a link where he is featured in an episode:

Wow… we might just be heading back into cheese territory with that clip… “What in Davey Jones’ locker is that?!” lol.
If you were looking to get a pet dolphin, I hope your parents had a pool… or at least a really big bathtub.

Thanks for including my song in the conversation. Obviously, my take on him is pretty much covered in the song. I did prefer him to Submariner, despite growing up more of a Marvel guy. More power to ya.

Hey, Mark! Thanks for stopping by and commenting in the backwater of the internet. That really is a great song.
Submariner’s a chump, Aquaman-wanna-be.

I’ve been thinking recently is that, like more prominent heroes like Captain America and Superman, Aquaman is a victim of the Real World Syndrome. Where we would not have so many problems if there really were superheroes.
This is because, though he’s pretty much a C-list hero in the DC Universe, he’s pretty powerful (as the song attests)
If there really were an Aquaman, there would certainly be nothing like the illegal dumping of toxic chemicals or fishing ground depletion off the east coast of Africa, he’d likely have a lot to say about whaling and he’d probably be much better spokesman for fighting Climate Change than a former senator who lives in a very large mansion…
Submariner’s always angry because people keep confusing him for Leonard Nimoy.

Of course you could argue that we’d have more problems if there really were superheroes. Escalation, and all that. Or what if people with powers like that really started not caring (power corrupts)? That’s the premise of “The Boys”.
