I’m torn on Transformers. Just looks like big special effects jumble. But might be interesting. But if I knew I’d be getting a 30 minute Trek short before hand, that would definitely sway me. Be like back when got cartoon shorts before movies. How do I get to be a studio exec

I guess the point is, I liked the cast, i liked the dynamic with the actors, so would like to see them doing more than just running around shooting their phasers. I’d even take some low budget, small effect movies with this cast. If they could crank out even a short a year, just to keep interest in the franchise between big budget special effects extravaganzas, that woudl be so cool. 30 minute mini-movie that coudl play before each years summer blockbuster between Trek releases.

Well, first of all, I’m jealous that you got to see it in IMAX, and for less than it would have cost me to do so.

I agree that a true science fiction movie, complete with thinly veiled allegory, would be cool – but it probably wouldn’t sell. I think the sequels are all going to be big action and relationships – which is cool, too. The days of thoughtful contemplation and big ideas (vs big action) in Star Trek are probably gone. It sure would be nice to get both, though.

Finally got around to seeing it in IMAX. Wow! Well worth the $14. Can definitely watch this from both perspectives. Putting aside fact I am fan of TOS, still loved this movie. Enough action, enough story, good effects. The enterprise looked fantastic. Yeah, IMAX! From the perspective of fan, still found this very enjoyable. Was a great way to kick things off. But as a TOS fan, I’d love to see a movie that just wasn’t action and effects. Love the big action, but seriously, wouldn’t a Squire of Gothos type movie just be fantastic?

Really? This is the first time I’ve heard a patently negative review. What kinds of things did you have a problem with? I have a couple guesses, but I want to see what direction you’re going.

There was good – but too many bad things to list. I commend JJ on what he did, but he could’ve done a better job with the story especially if this was a different timeline – things could’ve played out much differently with the same goals that would’ve made more sense.

I would watch it again – but as the slogan was stated — ‘This is not your father’s star trek’ — that is true – they made a better Starship Troopers.

I would recommend that anyone wanting to see this movie – that they read the Countdown comic book, it will make things somewhat more understandable.

Hey, Sean. Thanks for stopping by.

I agree with you about the Delta Vega monsters. Those monsters and the extremely coincidental meeting with Spock are some of those “What?” moments I was talking about. The monsters were almost a straight pull of the “bigger fish” bit from The Phantom Menace. For my money it would have been better to have that meeting take place in or extremely near the Federation outpost. It would have been much more believable.
