I heard about a Tron sequel a long time ago, but haven’t heard much about it since and forgot that it was in the works. I’m not sure how I feel about it now.
I loved the original Tron. It was fun, colorful, ground-breaking, and exciting. It had a lot of in-jokes for the geeks about computers, but it was still accessible to the average joe in a world where personal computing still hadn’t exploded. Plus, the effects were incredible, but they also had a good story.
Now, things look sleeker and darker, and story sounds like it might be pretty dark, too. On the one hand, that could be really cool. But on the other, I’ll miss the “Greetings, program!” sense of fun from the original.
From what I gather, Tron Legacy follows Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (the main character in the original, played by Jeff Bridges), as he looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidant (Olivia Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.
This is just the teaser trailer, though, so it’s only supposed to “wow” you and wet your appetite. They’re concentrating on the updates to the most loved tech in the original game, the light cycles. In the full trailer, I hope to see more about the story and get a sense that they didn’t forgo the fun. Keeping that in mind, though… it certainly looks sweet:
(This is a nice version, but you should really check out the HD version here – you can even read the speedometer on the yellow bike at :57 mark. Sooooo crisp.)
As a fan of the original, there are already things I can complain about if I wanted to (no 90 degree turns? No instant de-rez on crashing?), but I’ll give them credit for creating an eye-popper here and assume that they can explain away the “problems” I might have.
I really hope this one doesn’t disappoint.
