Review: X-Men: First Class

Magneto, Professor X, Mystique, Beast, Banshee, Darwin, Angel, Emma Frost, Havoc, Azazel, Sebastian Shaw, and… um… tornado dude.

That’s a lot of characters to pull together in one movie. They did a pretty decent job of using them all. But the focus here is obviously with the top 3 (arguably 4) names.

After coming out of this film, it’s obvious that they started writing “X-Men Origins: Magneto” and said “holy crap, we have an opportunity . . . → Read More: Review: X-Men: First Class

Review: Thor

Thor.

So… Thor.

Let me tell you… my back was so Thor after I spent all that time sitting in the theater.

Thank you! Tip your waiters!

Okay, seriously. I saw Thor tonight. And it scared me.

No, it’s not a scary movie. I’m not sure I even jumped once, except in excitement at how cool what was going on looked. There was a lot of work put into the visuals of this film. A . . . → Read More: Review: Thor

Revisitation and new worlds

I’m going to revisit a couple of topics discussed here recently and then we’ll hit some new topics.

Well, after my last post I finished watching The Event. I stick with what I said about it, except for this: they did finally manage to make the title relevant, and they alluded to more about the “protectors” that showed they really did have some kind of plan. I like that they had been here before (guess . . . → Read More: Revisitation and new worlds

Super-Review: Cancelled shows

Lots of series finales showed up this year. Some of them were only supposed to be season finales, but the shows were cancelled. Most of the time, they didn’t know they were being cancelled when the finale was filmed, which leaves us fans in a bit of a pickle, dealing with completely open-ended stories – and even full-on cliffhangers. But this is where we find ourselves, and there’s nothing to be done about it except . . . → Read More: Super-Review: Cancelled shows

The Colors of Control: Ex Machina

An extremely long time after I started it, I just finished Ex Machina‘s 50 issue run. Brian K. Vaughn puts on a heck of a story.

This is one of those stories that I think would work well as a TV series. It would be a bit different than most series, in that it covers two time periods at once, but that’s part of what makes it compelling. The basic structure of an issue is . . . → Read More: The Colors of Control: Ex Machina

Review: Doctor Who: The Impossible Astronaut

Unlike the companions in this episode, I will not be trying to prevent spoilers. I’m gonna lay it all out there, so if you haven’t seen the episode, don’t read this.

But first, a word about the BBC America version of the show.

Bleh.

I hated the new voice-over opening. For those who have seen only the UK version, it’s a quick addition just before the opening theme. Amy narrates how she and her “imaginary . . . → Read More: Review: Doctor Who: The Impossible Astronaut

Coming soon…

I just finished recording with my wife the inaugural edition of my completely new and wonderful conception: the “Things I didn’t blog about but should have” podcast.

That’s right, you can hear in live, monophonic sound, my own voice telling you about the things that I just didn’t bother writing about!

How much would you pay for that?! WAIT! Don’t answer… there’s more.

Each edition will have someone talking with me about the things I . . . → Read More: Coming soon…

Review: New Years Eve triple feature

In my last post I asked for some help coming up with films for my annual New Years Eve triple feature. I got some great responses (though very few actually on the blog, which I find kind of funny).

There was jockying and substitution all the way to the moment I paid the rental fee, but we ended up with the following list:

District 9 Knight and Day Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of . . . → Read More: Review: New Years Eve triple feature

Review: The Sing-Off

To steal a phrase from one of the judges, this show is “off the hook!”

I don’t like a lot of the “talent competitions” that are on TV. American Idol is little more than a chance to alternately berate people or contribute to creating a narcissistic personality. Yes, some of those people are very talented, but the show is really more about Simon Cowell and the other judges. America’s Got Talent I can tolerate a . . . → Read More: Review: The Sing-Off

Review: The Last Airbender

The Last Airbender‘s current ranking on RottenTomatoes.com? 6%

Six percent. In other words, atrocious. Worse than 94% of all movies rated. Horrible. A steaming pile of excrement. Your mother would slap you and make extra appointments with her psychiatrist if she heard you watched this movie.

I watched it anyway.

You know what? It’s not that bad.

Now, don’t get me wrong… it’s not good, either. That script needed some serious work. This is . . . → Read More: Review: The Last Airbender
