The gift of music

This is one of a series of articles I wrote for The Coalition of Awesomeness blog some time ago. The blog has since gone to an unfortunate (but very awesome) grave so I thought I’d share it here. This particular entry has a special meaning for me, and may shed some light on one of the entries on the list in a recent post.

It wasn’t my birthday, or Christmas, or any of the typical . . . → Read More: The gift of music

Daddy-Daughter Dates, and Bonding

I have two girls. They’re 6 (almost 7) and 8 years old now. They’re still at the ages when it’s cool to hang with Dad. I like that.

At the beginning of December, I decided I was going to start setting up “Daddy-Daughter Dates” – times I would spend with each one of them individually. The intent was a quick lunch out or a trip to a store or maybe bowling. It wasn’t supposed to . . . → Read More: Daddy-Daughter Dates, and Bonding

Life After the End of the World: My Dad, the Mayans, and Me

December 21st. For years that date had been discussed ad nauseum. The date the Mayan calendar ended. The end of the world. It became a joke. I thought it was pretty funny myself. I dropped a joke or two on Facebook about it.

My Dad would have thought that was hilarious. In fact, he’d probably have actually done it. But he couldn’t. In his case, the Mayans were right. Despite being in . . . → Read More: Life After the End of the World: My Dad, the Mayans, and Me

“Stolen” baseballs

At a recent Rangers game, a couple was caught on film denying a game ball to a crying toddler, and they have been put through the social media ringer over it since then. Here’s the video…

I think the announcer was being a little harsh, myself. It didn’t look like they were “rubbing it in” – though they certainly were oblivious. In fact, they’ve copped to not noticing the crying kid in their excitement. . . . → Read More: “Stolen” baseballs

Tommy Jordan: Parenting and Instant Fame in the Internet Age

Recently a North Carolina man named Tommy Jordan posted a video on Facebook in response to a letter his teenage daughter, Hannah, had written on Facebook. The video was intended as an “in kind” response to his daughter, but it went viral and now Tommy (and his family) is dealing with the downside of short-term fame.

I’ve watched the video, and read all of the subsequent posts he has made on his Facebook page. It’s . . . → Read More: Tommy Jordan: Parenting and Instant Fame in the Internet Age

Why Dads of girls watch sports

I am not a big sports fan. I enjoy watching tennis from time to time, but have even lost touch with that mostly. I like watching televised sports in short bursts. A couple of plays at a time is about the most I can handle of a football game. I can’t carry on an intelligent conversation about sports for long.

Apparently, the time is coming when that will change.

I just discovered a new blog . . . → Read More: Why Dads of girls watch sports

2 voices + 4 spices = 1 big impact

You never know what’s going to make an impact on your kids. I don’t mean an immediate “wow!” impact, I’m talking about the long term stuff. It may not even be a big deal when it happens, and you might not know of its impact for years to come.

I wrote about one of those moments on the Coalition of Awesomeness recently.

Review: No Ordinary Family – Pilot

I managed to see a limited release of ABC’s new show “No Ordinary Family” online yesterday. Not sure if it’s still available, but if it is these instructions will get you there.

Given the show’s premise of a family of superheroes, the pilot episode is predictably an origin story. And that’s a good word to use, too: predictable.

It was pleasant to watch, but there were very few surprises (though there were a couple – . . . → Read More: Review: No Ordinary Family – Pilot

FINALLY, I get to wield a real lightsaber!

Yep. This is exactly how Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back would have gone if I was in it.

Autographs are $2. I gotta cover my costs.

Hearing the words “That’s how I roll, baby” coming out of my Dad’s mouth makes the time I spent looking for pictures of everyone facing the camera well worth it.

Five songs that altered my perceptions

Lee has his weekly Top 5 list up over at Quit Your Day Job. This time it’s the “Five songs that have left their footprint in my life.” That’s a tough list to come up with. I’m glad he didn’t say 5 favorite songs, though – that would have been impossible. If we’re just looking for five songs that made a mark in my life, I might be able to do that.
