By Jeff, on January 22nd, 2007 Hometime – How-To – Project Help – Preventive Home Maintenance
This is a great list. Excellent reminders. I am terrible at home maintenance so I actually need these kinds of reminders—otherwise I just wait around for something to fall apart, which requires me to pay out the nose for some professional to fix it. Dumb.
Just one question for all you readers: how many of those chores do you actually do?

By Jeff, on January 21st, 2007 Our National Savings Rate Is Embarrassing [Fool.com] January 17, 2007
Wow… this was surprising to me:
…consider these historical numbers for the U.S. personal savings rate:
* 1984: 10.8% * 2001: 1.8% * 2003: 1.4%
Do you see a troubling trend? So do I. Care to guess where we landed in 2005?
* 2005: (0.5%)
That’s right — negative savings!
Is that unprecedented? Well, not exactly. We hit negative levels for two years — during . . . → Read More: U.S. National Savings Rate breaks a bad barrier
By Jeff, on January 15th, 2007 The Simple Dollar » The Money Savvy Pig and My Son’s Allowance
Another good idea from Trent, over at The Simple Dollar. A transparent, compartmentalized, piggybank does seem like a good way to teach money management to young kids. His plan hits the major keys of teaching: Tell, Show, Do, Review.
Obviously he’ll have to tell his son what he’s doing. Then he will show him what it looks like as the savings build. Though . . . → Read More: Teaching money management to kids
By Jeff, on January 14th, 2007 G-Ding.TV | Viewing Linux in a whole new way
For the cost of basic hardware you can have a PVR (Personal Video Recorder, e.g., TIVO) in your house. You can even use an old computer (maybe go get a bigger hard drive, and a TV Tuner card if you don’t already have one), to save even more money.
This is nothing new, really. MythTV (the PVR software) has been around for a while. Linux (the . . . → Read More: Almost free TV / PVR
By Jeff, on December 31st, 2006 I’ve been quiet on here for a couple weeks due to some time pressures. Lots to do during the lead-up to Christmas, as I’m sure you can all understand. I had it all planned out – a full week of vacation to get it all done – but then some problems at work forced me to give up most of my “free” time. The week after Christmas was spent running around to stores with gift . . . → Read More: What I’ve been thinking
By Jeff, on December 13th, 2006 Easy Meal Prep Association and Meal Assembly Directory
I’m looking for ways to live cheaper. I got a tip in the comments of another blog to check out a Meal Preparatory business. The link above is a directory of these kinds of businesses.
In case you aren’t familiar with the concept, the way it works is that you sign up for a session, choose the meals you want to make from that month’s menu, then . . . → Read More: Is a meal preparation service a good deal?

Make any long distance calls in the last three years? Claim your cash in 2007!
The repeal of the Federal excise tax (initiated in 1898 to fund the Spanish-American war) means the government is handing out refunds. Niiiiice.
You’re eligible for the refund if you made a long-distance call between Feb. 28, 2003, and Aug. 1, 2006. To make it easy, the IRS is offering a . . . → Read More: Claim some long-distance cash!
By Jeff, on December 9th, 2006 The Simple Dollar
If you’re looking for a simple, easy to follow personal finance blog, check out The Simple Dollar. I get a headache just thinking about personal finance, but I seriously enjoy this site and I’m learning quite a bit as well. It’s not the be-all-and-end-all of finance information, but it is open, personal, easy to read, and full of good advice – especially if you’re looking to lower some of your debt.
