Star Trek – title recitation record

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

So this guy named all the episodes of classic Star Trek in 1:39 at a World Record Appreciation Society event… apparently setting a record.

Eh… no big deal. That’s just relatively simple memorization (albeit a long list). I’ve got a friend who can name the title of every episode within 13 seconds of the start of the teaser – usually way faster – which is just about long enough for the planet to show up on screen and the Enterprise to begin it’s orbit.

Mike…. take this guy down!

Flashing Forward to Fall TV

Monday, September 7th, 2009

The fall TV season is upon us. Are there any shows out there worthy of watching this year? Any guilty pleasures you’ve just gotta have? Anything that just drains the life out of you but you used to love it and can’t give it up?

I used to watch much more television than I do now. I watched sit-coms, cartoons, dramas… anything but reality TV. Now I’m even avoiding shows that I would probably like because I don’t have the time (I’m looking at you, “Lost”).

So here are my picks (and their premier dates) for what TV shows I’m gonna spend my time on this season. Some are good, some are guilty pleasures, and some I just keep hoping will regain their former glory.

That’s it. Turns out they’re all Sci-Fi/Fantasy. Not a huge shock, though it wasn’t always this way. I used to be devoted to Law and Order, for example. Now I’ll catch it when I can, as well as NCIS and House.

What are you looking forward to?

The Doctor is all wet… on Mars – Tuesday TubeWatch

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

On the heels of the success of Torchwood: Children of Earth, the following clip has been released for the next Doctor Who special:

The companion here is Adelaide, played by Lindsay Duncan. The notes on her is that she is the very strong-minded head of Mars Base, and is not too happy about the Doctor’s interference.

This special is set to air in November. My guess would be around Thanksgiving, but as that’s not a British holiday it’s certainly not a given. Two other specials are set to air this year, but no details are available beyond the spoiler for the Christmas special previously mentioned.

Just from this short clip, it looks like a classic episode. Running around, and weird, passive, yet obviously dangerous aliens taking over human bodies. This could be a creepy one.

And since we’re on Doctor Who, here’s an unsubtantiated rumor via Slice of Sci-Fi about the annual Children in Need Doctor Who segment:

It could be the moment that “Doctor Who” fans have dreamed about for years or it could be another rumor.

British newspaper, the Daily Mirror is reporting that this year’s “Doctor Who” segment will feature the first-ever on-screen meeting of all eleven incarnations of the Doctor. Yes, that includes future Doctor Matt Smith and the most popular classic series Doctor, Tom Baker.

“This is a momentous episode for all Doctor Who fans,” the report says. “Never before have all the Doctors been in the same room, let alone in the same show. It’s been a logistical nightmare getting all the actors together and available for shooting on the same days. But the script has already been started and it’s classic Doctor Who – really witty and very sharp. Viewers will see the Time Lords regenerating and emerging one by one from the TARDIS, each with their own quirky opening line. David Tennant is the central character in the episode. He’s trying to hunt down some special time travel apparatus. What he’s actually lost has not yet been decided, but the idea is for all the other Doctors to club together to help David find it. The actors who are no longer with us, William [Harntell], Jon [Pertwee] and Patrick[Troughton], will make special cameo appearances, with footage from original shows being flashed up on screen. It’s a really exciting project – and all for a good cause.”

The BBC has not confirmed the latest rumor, saying that any plans for this year’s Children in Need segment have not been finalized.

Sounds cool, but this kind of rumor has surfaced almost every year. I’m not holding my breath.

What do Bruce Campbell and the Olympics have in common? – Tuesday TubeWatch

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

I knew that I knew it from somewhere. It sounded familiar, but I couldn’t place it. Now I know. The Olympics stole their theme song from the opening credits of one of my favorite too-quickly-cancelled shows.

The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. had much in common with another favorite western of mine, Wild, Wild West (not to be confused with the unfortunate movie reboot version). Bruce Campbell brought his trademark snarkiness to Brisco and we were treated to a show that made westerns fun again. Light humor and abundant action made this show a treat to watch on Saturday mornings. Brisco County Jr. starts out as a pretty standard western story, where Brisco is tracking down his father’s killers, but as the season progresses we discover that the plot is bigger than we were led to believe, and a sci-fi element is brought in. That sounds like it won’t work, but it does. Wild, Wild West did it (though without a continuing story arc), and Firefly just reversed the emphasis (sci-fi with a bit of western thrown in).

I’m still a bit surprised they cancelled it, actually. It really was good. And apparently the theme song was good enough for NBC to use as themes for both Major League Baseball and the Olympics.

Come to think of it, the theme songs for the other two shows are great, too.

Wild, Wild West’s theme had a bit more of a western feel to it, and the animated opening was just great (though he’s supposed to punch the lady at the end… weird version):

Firefly’s was a bit moodier – which was fitting as the show was much more serious than Brisco or West.

Anyway… back to Brisco. That show was my first taste of Bruce Campbell, and I was an immediate convert. I’ve seen him in a few other shows, most notably Hercules and Xena, and most recently, Burn Notice (excellent, btw). I know about Jack of all Trades, but haven’t seen it. What’s your favorite Bruce-related show?

(Yeah, I know he’s in movies, too… but I’m sticking to TV at the moment.)

Doctor Who/Torchwood news

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Okay, I’ve been remiss in getting the Doctor Who news out lately. ‘Cause I know you all depend on me alone to let you know what’s going on with that show. I mean, seriously, where else would you go? BBC? Any of the completely sci-fi focused blogs out there that cover this stuff by the minute? psshh… that’d be crazy.

Anyway… here’s what’s come across my radar.

First, a minor point: when the new season starts with Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor next year, the credits will change. I’m not just talking about the actor’s name being different, I mean the style of the credits will change. In fact, they’ll be reverting back to the old style, classic Who credits where the titular character’s face appears on screen. I imagine they’ll also change the music slightly, as they tend to do from time to time. Same theme, different arrangement.  I think that’s one way that the new Stephen Moffat-led show is tipping its hat to the classic series.

In a behind-the-scenes photo from the Christmas special this year, we get a reveal of a guest actor and a possibly major spoiler harkening back to a guess from earlier last year. In fact, this is such a major spoiler that I’m going to use the Spoiler Guard.

[if you're reading this in email or RSS feed, it's possible this won't protect you, so go directly to the article to skip over this].

So, interesting stuff there. I can’t wait!

On the Torchwood side of the house, we’ve got the newest trailer (which by now has been out for a few weeks) and a release date on BBC America (which will coincide with the channel’s switch to HD programming).

Told over five consecutive nights starting July 20 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT, the series re-joins Captain Jack (John Barrowman), Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) and Ianto Jones (Gareth David-Lloyd) as they are still coming to terms with the death of two of their closest friends. Yet despite their pain, they know they have a job to do. This time they are faced with their fiercest threat to date – one which throws the future of Torchwood and the entire human race spiralling into danger. Battling against the odds, do they stand a chance of saving mankind?

Here’s the trailer:

That grabs me a little bit more than the original trailer, but not much, sadly. There is just enough of a hint, though, that I think the show will be good and the trailer’s where the failure lies. Maybe it’s just high hopes. We’ll see in July.

Finally, we have a piece of Who related news that makes me sad on multiple levels:

Wales’ Sebastian Neale loved “Doctor Who.”  How much you ask?

Enough to have a “Doctor Who” themed funeral.  The 26-year old fan recently passed away.  But instead of the standard funeral, Neale had a “Doctor Who” themed one, including having his casket look like the exterior of the Doctor’s TARDIS.

Attendees to the funeral were greeted by the a line from the fourth Doctor story, “Pyramids of Mars,” saying, “I’m a Time Lord, I walk in eternity.”  And the usual comforting words from scripture were replaced with William Hartnell’s first Doctor speech from “Dalek Invasion of Earth” and later re-used in the prelude of “The Five Doctors,” saying, “Someday I shall come back, yes I shall come back.  Until then there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs, and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine.”

Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern? – Tuesday TubeWatch

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

I’ve posted before about the Green Lantern movie(s) in the works. No cast has been announced, no real information has come to my attention at all about the live action movie, other than it’s still on the books. However, some fan put together a pretty good trailer for what he’d like to see, using Nathan Fillion as the lead character, Hal Jordan. And you know what… it looks pretty good:

First of all, this took a lot of work to put together, so kudos to the guy that created it. I’m not usually a fan of fan-made trailers for movies, but this one is pretty nice.

Obviously it’s really a collection of clips from various sources, including movies (Superman Returns, the Matrix trilogy, Serenity, Star Trek, etc), TV shows (most notably, Justice League), and video games. But most have been modified with new graphics and lighting effects that fit the Green Lantern look, and it really looks good (usually). You have to forgive the differences in look between the video game clips and the others, but it comes off surprisingly well integrated, in my opinion.

The other thing this trailer does for me is begin to allay my fears that the effects in the actual upcoming movie might look stupid. That still could happen, obviously, but if somebody could make the effects in this trailer themselves, even building on others’ work, the professionals getting paid to put something top-notch out should be able to blow us away.

Another surprise in this for me is that I think Nathan Fillion could actually take the role of Hal Jordan and do it justice. He didn’t occur to me as a possible actor for this role, but in thinking about it, I kind of hope he gets it.

Review: Battlestar Galactica finale

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

It’s over.

For four years of my life (which, oddly enough, took six years), I’ve been watching Battlestar Galactica weekly. This redesigned joy from my childhood became an engaging, exciting, and dramatic story in my adulthood. As with any other TV show, there are excellent episodes and episodes that fell flat. A series finale, and the lead-in stories, must meet the highest standard, in my opinion – especially in an “arc” show (i.e., one that tells a cohesive story from beginning to end, rather than “episodic,” in which the characters are all but reset at the end of each episode). There’s a lot to bring together. A lot of questions that must be answered.

Did BSG bring the goods?

There are SPOILERS below. Turn back now if you haven’t seen it. Seriously. I’m gonna touch on just about everything.

But first, a note to the Sci-Fi Channel. I think I said it best when I exploded on Facebook:

You think maybe a mention at the end of the previous episode that “hey, guess what… next week’s long awaited series finale is going to be running a bit long, so if for some reason you can’t make it home in time to see it, you might want to set your recorder to run, oh, about 15 minutes extra so you DON’T MISS THE END OF THE ENTIRE FLIPPIN’ SERIES THAT YOU SAT ON THE COUCH AND FAITHFULLY WATCHED FOR FOUR STINKING YEARS” might have been warranted?!?!?!?

I don’t know… just seems courteous to me. But I’m funny like that I guess.

About an hour and a half later I downloaded the show on bit-torrent and forced my wife out of bed to watch the last 10 minutes at about 1am (she’s a very nice woman who has refrained from killing me for years). The gap ruined the flow of the ending for me, but at least I saw it.

Okay, on to the show…

The battle stuff was just plain cool. There’s no denying that. When they said point-blank range, they weren’t kidding. The ship took a full-on beating. Loved it. Nice tactic with the Raptors jumping around as well. To nitpick, however, a couple of times I had a hard time figuring out which turrets I was looking at and whether the fact that they were firing was good or bad. CG team and director needed to work together better there. Also, while I loved the old style centurians showing up for the beating, I’m not sure why they were there, story-wise. Why would obsolete models be guarding the main colony?

During the battle, Boomer turns the tide by rescuing Hera, thus moving towards redemption. I’m split on this. Seemed like convenient writing to me, but at the same time it provided a nice end for the character, especially with the flashback to her talk with Adama. I liked that she took responsibility and knew it would cost her her life. I also liked that Athena was the one to finish it. Still, it was a rather convenient hinge for the whole rescue.

Speaking of people dying: I thought it was great that Tory knew it was likely she was toast but went ahead anyway. And Tyrol was nice about it, given the circumstances. No blood. No speeches. Just efficient action. I also liked Tigh’s comment that he would have done the same thing.

Interesting that after Anders’ end, the Final 5 are the Final 3.

Angels. I actually thought that was a pretty good resolution to the Baltar/Six problem. There was enough setup that it made sense. Heck, it was flat out stated at one point in the third season. So I’m okay with that.

But then there’s Kara. Was she also an angel? She seems to be significantly different. There’s really no resolution with her, beyond that she knew the music and that turned out to be Earth’s coordinates. How is she dead on the original Earth? How did she come back after imploding? How was she having visions? How does she just disappear? Obviously there was “God’s” intervention in these things, but it’s never really stated. Here’s what Ron Moore said to TV Guide:

TVGuide.com: What exactly is Kara at the end of the series? An angel?
Moore: I think Kara remains an ambiguous figure. Kara lived a mortal life, died and was resurrected to get them to their final destiny. Clearly she was a key player in the events that led to [the fleet's] finding a home. And, I don’t know if there’s any more to it beyond that. I think you could call her an angel, you could call her a demon, the second coming or the first coming, I guess, chronologically speaking. You can say that she had a certain messiah-like quality, in the classic resurrection story. There’s a lot of different ways you can look at it, but the more we talked about it, the more we realized there was more in the ambiguity and mystery of it than there was in trying to give it more definition in the end.

TVGuide.com: So she is completely different than the hallucination/visions of Baltar and Six?
Moore: Yes, Kara was physically among us. Everybody saw her. She was tactile, she flew a viper, she was around. She was with us. And yet, there was a body that died on the original Earth, and Baltar did the DNA analysis and it was her body, so she was literally brought back from the dead by something — by some higher power or other power, and she came back to serve a function.

So in other words, they wrote themselves into a corner and couldn’t figure out how to explain what they set up. That last answer is exactly the problem. It’s all setup and no resolution. I could even live with the larger ambiguity, I suppose, if they would just say how there’s a 2000 year old crashed Starbuck on an old Earth, and why that’s at all relevant. And maybe how is Kara the “Harbinger of Doom” as foretold by the hybrids?

Moving on…

Loved the theme from the original BSG making a showing as Anders drives all the ships into the sun. Very nice. That was always one of my favorite themes.

The shared dream between Athena, Roslyn, Hera, Baltar, and Six… so the only explanation there is that it’s a vision from God? Hmmm… okay, I guess that fits the story.

Admiral Adama and Roslyn: I liked the way that played out, for the most part. I liked that Roslyn didn’t receive some miracle cure or overly happy ending. They did that right. There are two things I don’t understand, though.

1. Why did Adama leave everyone else, never to return, and why did everyone accept that as inevitable? That seemed out of left field to me.

2. What happened to his Raptor?

The ending with Baltar and Six in Times Square: a little heavy handed there at the end, but okay.

Overall… this is a mammoth story to try to pull together in a satisfying way for a finale episode with resolutions for so many characters and requisite action. I think they did a good job. I think they would have done a much better job if they knew where they were going from the start instead of making the series up as they went along – they probably would have fixed the Kara-sized holes, for example – but it was a good finale, overall.

Not sure if I’ll sign up for “Caprica,” but there’s a real good chance I’ll watch “The Plan.” If nothing else, I enjoy Dean Stockwell’s acting.

Sci-fi news roundup

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Here are a few Science Fiction/Fantasy tidbits I picked up on the smoke-signal network recently.

Like a ship wandering through the seas of Hollywood, it looked like Narnia sequel The Voyage of the Dawn Treader was going to be lost as Disney debated dropping the property after The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and Prince Caspian didn’t do quite as well as they’d hoped. Well, apparently they’ve been steered to the correct port, because we now have a release date. Moving back to a winter opening, the third film in the series is now scheduled to launch on December 10, 2010.

I hope this one does well enough to continue the series. I’d love to see the full set realized on screen.

Smallville has been renewed for a ninth season. Is that a good thing?

I’ve made no secret that I thought they should have ended the series at the last two season finales. This show has been on its last legs for three years. There is hope, though, that the ninth season may be worthwhile. Here’s why:

  1. Michael Rosenbaum is rumored to be considering a return to the show to reprise his role as Lex Luthor next year.
  2. Kristen Kreuk’s Lana Lang is essentially out of the picture (though there’s still that annoying option for guest appearances).
  3. Sam Witmer has not yet been signed for next season, so his run could be up as Doomsday by the season finale this year.

If the rumur is true and Lex is to return, and they keep Lana out of the way, they could salvage the show. With Lex gone totally over the edge he could run Clark ragged all season, leading to his final emergence as Superman (and perhaps the incarceration of Lex).

“Oh, but Lex is dead!” you say. You gotta be kidding me. Lex doesn’t get punked by the Arrow, I don’t care how much evidence there is.

Green Lantern - First Flight

Green Lantern – First Flight

Speaking of super-heroes…

I mentioned before that the Green Lantern movie is on its way through early production stages. That has not changed.

What I hadn’t heard before is that we’re also getting an animated Lantern film.

This is another in the Bruce Timm line of animated films. Timm has been responsible for the best animated superhero offerings in the last 20 years (except for Pixar’s “The Incredibles”). On TV and DVD, Timm has brought Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and the entire Justice League to life. The man gets it.

The new film focuses on the Hal Jordan character and recounts his entry into the Lantern Corps under the tutelage of Sinestro, the discovery of Sinestro’s duplicity, and Jordan’s subsequent growth into a protector not just of Earth but of the entire Lantern Corps.

Hal Jordan will be voiced by Christoper Meloni of Law and Order: SVU fame. Tricia Helfer, “Six” from Battlestar Galactica, also lends her voice to the production.

The two disc set looks like it will be pretty good. In addition to the standard extras (featurettes, etc.), the second disc will also include at least two episodes of Justice League, chosen by Bruce Timm.

Sounds good to me. I’m in.

Finally, in Doctor Who news, the TARDIS gets a makeover.

When Matt Smith takes over as the new Doctor next year, he’ll apparently reconfigure the interior of the TARDIS. This is far from the first time the look of the ship has changed, but it is a novelty in the rebooted series.

The outside of the blue box will apparently get a polish, to ready it for HD, but will look essentially the same.

According to an unnamed source, “It will be the most hitech, intricate TARDIS ever.” Sounds interesting.

Sci-fi rumors and news catch up

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Well, here we are with more sci-fi news. This time it’ll be a mix of things old and new. Strap on your propeller hat and hang on, ’cause here we go…

Spider-Man 4 is apparently going to shoot in 2010 for a 2011 release. This is information gleaned from an interview with J.K. Simmons, who plays J. Jonah Jameson in the films. Sam Raimi is on-board as director and Tobey McGuire is set to reprise his title role. Kirsten Dunst was unsigned as of the interview, which was a couple weeks ago.

In really old news, A&E is going to reinterpret the classic 1960’s hit “The Prisoner” with James Caviezel (Frequency, The Passion of the Christ) in the title role and Ian McKellan (The Lord of the Rings, X-Men) as Number Two.

The newer news is that A&E has now released a behind the scenes piece that reveals a bit about the costuming and locations:

Moving up into newer news, Battlestar Galactica’s prequel, Caprica, will see its pilot movie released in an extended, unrated version direct to DVD (and digital download) long before it’s aired on television. The release date is set for April 21, 2009, not long after the March 20th series finale of its parent show.

“Ever since fans first caught wind of the ‘Battlestar Galactica’ prequel Caprica, they have been eagerly following its development,” said Mark Stern, Executive Vice President, Original Programming for SCI FI & Co-Head Original Content, Universal Cable Productions.  “We wanted to give them a chance to see the pilot in its original form and experience the prequel to the BSG story while that series’ finale was still ringing in their ears. It also affords the creative team an unprecedented chance to get viewers feedback before production on the Caprica series begins this summer.”

See the full press release at Slice of Sci-fi.

Finally, some news on Torchwood!

The new 5 episode mini-series, which will be the entire season for 2009, will air simultaneously on BBC and BBC America (though we don’t know exactly what dates it will air). And just in time for the NY Comic-Con, we have a trailer.

Warning: this is not for the kids.

Torchwood: Children of Earth trailer

To be honest, it doesn’t look as intriguing as I’d hoped, but the whole “they’ve been here before” thing is pulling me in.

And here we are at the last bit of news. Warner Brothers has reportedly stalled all of its DC superhero movies (e.g., the Superman sequel and the Justice League). Despite that, plans seem to be progressing on the Green Lantern movie (which rocks!) in the hiring of Martin Campbell as director. With a James Bond movie and the Zorro films under his belt, it’s possible he could pull it off. Still a gamble, though, in my book. The movie is gonna have to hit hard on all cylinders to be satisfying. We’re talking about Iron Man level, not just Incredible Hulk level, sweetness here.

Battlestar blitz – be prepared

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Battlestar Galactica is returning for the second half of its fourth and final season tonight (NOTE for those recording… the first new episode is extended and will go about 4 minutes over the hour). Just 10 episodes stand between us and the final fate of Humans and Cylons—even fewer than that before we find out the identity of the fifth Cylon. If you’ve forgotten what’s happened to this point (or for some crazy reason you’re just getting on board now), here’s a recap of the major points of the entire story so far. It goes by pretty fast, so don’t be ashamed to watch it twice…

You can catch the other 9 episodes on the Sci-Fi Channel BSG Rewind site (in much higher quality).

So… who is the Fifth Cylon? If rumors are to be believed (and they’re coming from the show’s creator, so keep that in mind), it’s not anyone in this picture, but it’s someone who’s been around a long time and is pretty obvious. Which describes a lot of people.
