Review: Stargate: Continuum

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Everybody dies. Some of them more than once.

Usually, that kind of statement is either a joke or a major spoiler, but then, this is a time travel movie, so I really haven’t told you anything of any importance. Or have I? In a time travel movie, it’s all about when you die that matters.

Stargate: Continuum is a fun return to the lives of the SG-1 team. There were two main story threads left unresolved when the television show was canceled in its record-breaking 10th season. One was the completion of the Ori story (told in the movie The Ark of Truth), and the other was the fate of the final Goauld System Lord, Ba’al. This movie delivers a nice slice of Ba’al totally eradicating Stargate Command and executing his plan for the dominion of Earth. It’s all up to our intrepid team of heroes, who must once again come from behind to save the Earth.

Time travel movies are tough to pull off. It’s easy to get trapped in a paradoxical loop of events. I think this movie handled that very well, with only one hole that immediately comes to mind, and it’s a minor one.

There are also some excellent action sequences. The effects, while not perfect, were very good.

While almost every SGC character (and many Goaulds) from the series makes at least a cameo in this film, the story centers around Daniel, Carter, and Mitchell. All 10 seasons from the show are represented in one way or another, but you don’t have to know any of it to appreciate this story. It really is a good story that proves that SG-1 still has legs (most of them, anyway), and I’d be happy to see more movies in the future. However, if this were to be the last SG-1 story, I think it serves as a good conclusion to the series.

Oh, and when I said everyone dies? I lied.

Movie news roundup - Sci-Fi and comics lovers, rejoice!

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Lots of news and some rumors hitting the net lately… here are the best of the bunch for Sci-Fi and comics lovers:

The next Stargate SG-1 film titled Stargate: Continuum now has a July 29 DVD release date.

Marvel has announced that Iron Man 2 has been confirmed for release in 2010, in addition to a movie about Thor. Also reported: the Avengers and Captain America (with Matthew McConaughey as the lead?) in 2011.

Also announced by Marvel: an Ant Man movie, though the timeline for the film is unknown. (This is where they start to lose me… Ant Man? Seriously? I think they’re stretching to reach a mainstream audience with that one. My guess is his popularity in the Avengers movie will determine if this one really gets made.)

Iron Man, Tony Stark, will make a cameo in The Incredible Hulk.

Superman: Man of Steel will now not be delayed due to the “Justice League of America” film but is geared up for a 2009 release with Brandon Routh back as Superman.

Both Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and The Dark Knight will run over 140 minutes. In fact, The Dark Knight may run close to three hours.

Speaking of The Dark Knight, director Christopher Nolan has signed on for a third Batman feature, and Christian Bale has expressed interest as well. Details of plot are even starting to circulate - apparently the film will focus on Two-Face and may introduce Robin, following the plot of the graphic novels “The Long Halloween” and “Dark Victory” for a rough outline.

Stargate: The Ark of Truth

Stargate SG-1: The Ark of TruthJust in case you missed it, the direct-to-DVD continuation of the Stargate SG-1 Ori storyline, “The Ark of Truth,” is to be released next Tuesday, March 11th.

You can apparently pre-order it from Amazon. If you’re gonna buy it anyway, use this link, and help a brother out… every nickel helps support my wife’s coke habit.

(Okay, it’s diet coke, but it’s still expensive in these kinds of quantities…)

Stargate SG-1 DVD movies delayed

Hicks Picks 9 - Slice of Scifi

AUGH! This is annoying.

“Stargate” movies delayed

The direct-to-home-theater “Stargate” movies are coming–but it’s going to take a bit longer than expected.

20th Century Fox told Gateworld that the first movie, “Stargate: The Ark of Truth” has been pushed back until early 2008 and that the next film “Stargate: Continuum” will also be delayed. Tentative release dates are now March and October of next year, respectively.

“Ark of Truth” is set to resolve the two-year long story arc concerning the Ori and was eagerly anticipated by “Stargate” fans. No official word yet on why the movies have been delayed. “The Ark of Truth” has been in post-production for several weeks now and “Continuum” just finished up principal filming a few weeks ago.

There is some good news for SG-1 fans. On his TV Guide Blog, actor Michael Shanks stated that should the movies perform well, the studio is interested in producing two direct-to-home-theater “Stargate SG-1″ films a year. Shanks told fans to “cross their fingers.” It probably wouldn’t hurt to buy the disc when it comes out either.

There is some speculation that the studio could order a third direct-to-home-theater “SG-1″ movie before the release of the “The Ark of Truth.”

We’ll keep our eyes and ears open for any details and firm release dates as they become available.

What the delay may do, though, is provide some room in the Atlantis scripts for ‘teasers’ about the movies - just little mentions here and there about what’s going on in the Ori fight, potentially drumming up some further demand. That could be cool.

And if it gives them time for another “direct to home theater” project, I’m okay with that, too. Though I have no idea what format “direct to home theater” refers to.

Battlestar Galactica moves to Sundays

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

SCI FI Wire | The News Service of the SCI FI Channel

SCI FI Channel’s award-winning series Battlestar Galactica will move to a new timeslot starting Jan. 21, 2007: Sundays at 10 p.m. ET/PT, following the premiere of the new original series The Dresden Files at 9 p.m.

When I first heard this, I thought it was a bonehead move. Suits moving things around for no good reason, and dismantling a good thing. After all, Sci-Fi had me locked in for a minimum of 3 hours every Friday night (much to my wife’s dismay) with Stargates SG-1 and Atlantis, plus a BSG kicker. Then they cancelled SG-1 and now they’re moving BSG? What does that leave me with on Fridays?! Where’s my block programming?! Now I have to be content with Atlantis and maybe Doctor Who in prime-time Friday slots. Maybe they’ll throw a Heroes rerun in there. Actually, that’s not a bad line-up, but it’s nowhere near as hard of a hit as the original Sci-Fi Friday block.

But while I still feel that pain, I’ve taken some time to think about it and it’s not that boneheaded. On any given weeknight, Sci-Fi faces serious competition from the big 4 networks. Sunday night programming across the board, however, is notoriously slim. BSG has an audience now, and it’s fanatical enough to follow the show to the new slot, so they shouldn’t lose too many viewers. At the same time, they should pick up viewers who are casting about looking for something worth watching on a Sunday night. So viewership should increase — which is really what the network game is all about.

The biggest problem I have is that when The 4400 and The Dead Zone return to USA Network, they’ll be airing on Sunday nights too (if they hold their spots). That’s a conflict I can’t reconcile. I can’t tape two shows at once with only one reliable VCR. So of course you see what NBC Universal (Sci-Fi’s parent) is forcing me to do, don’t you? That’s right: bittorrent to the rescue!

Stargate SG-1 ends its run on Direct-to-DVD

Slice of Scifi - Science Fiction TV & Movie News, Interviews & more » BREAKING Stargate SG-1 News

This is both great and disappointing.

On the one hand, we get to see the end of the Ori storyline. That’s excellent. I’m glad they figured out a way to make that happen.

On the other hand, it’s direct-to-DVD. That just screams “second-class”. Hardly fitting for a record-breaking, high quality TV series.

There will be a total of two movies released.

The first flick will tie up most of the finale’s loose threads — “It’s the climax of the Ori story line” — and will be written-directed by exec producer Robert Cooper. The second film, penned by Wright, will involve time travel, and both projects should debut in the fall of 2007.

There is some speculation that the time travel movie could be used to kick off another spinoff series. I’ll leave final judgement on that until it comes to be, but my initial reaction is that that would be a mistake. I’d rather see them invest the time and money into feature films (and use Atlantis as a teaser sprinboard from time to time), or into Atlantis than start another series. The more stuff they put out there, the more tired the ideas are apt to become. We’re invested in these characters now. Learn from the decline of Star Trek and don’t oversaturate the airwaves with one universe. (By the way, I have the same worry about the recent news of at least two Doctor Who spinoffs in production simultaneously. Unnerving.)

Stargate powered downGateWorld - Cooper: SG-1 will go on

On the heels of the long-running series’ landmark 200th episode, the Sci-Fi Channel has chosen not to renew Stargate SG-1 for an 11th season. This is coming as a shock to some fans as we approach the mid-point of the series record-breaking 10th year in production - the longest continuous run for any science fiction television show. Oddly it seems to be a shock to the people working on the show as well. Ever since the fourth season, the writers have written every season with the threat of cancellation and have had a series finale on deck - until now. This year, both creatively and contractually (for the actors), the series had a plan for the next season. So of course, the hammer would fall now.

But there is hope, according to series executive producer Robert C. Cooper:

“As far as the future I can’t comment yet because nothing has been confirmed,” Cooper said. “What we want to emphasize is that the franchise is not dying. SG-1 will go on in some way. We’re just not ready to announce how.”

It’s hard to imagine that another network will pick the show up, though it’s certainly a possibility. There have been plans for a movie a few times, so that’s where I’d place bets. And if this season’s finale doesn’t wrap up the storyline, I would think they’d have to create a movie — at the very least a tele-movie — to complete the arc.

Spin-off series Stargate Atlantis has been renewed for a fourth season.

‘Stargate’ sequels (Note: NOT SG-1)

GateWorld - News: Devlin optimistic about ‘Stargate’ sequels

Dean Devlin, producer of the original 1994 movie Stargate, seems to be moving forward with two sequels to the film, which was apparently meant as the kickoff to a trilogy from the beginning.

Devlin was never a big supporter of what has become a record-breaking TV spinoff of his creation, though he says he is proud of Stargate: SG-1 for its success.

In fact, the article states:

Devlin also believes that his original mythology can coexist with the hit TV series, the events of which picked up one year after the end of the film. “I think the series could still live at the end of the third sequel,” he said. “So we’re going to try to not tread on their stories.”

I’m not sure how he’s going to pull that off, given that SG-1’s story starts 1 year after the movie ends, and the new movies would begin 12 years after the first movie (2 years after the current timeline in the show). But I’m also perfectly happy to see the alternate version of the story as originally intended, and can separate it from the SG-1 show canon. After all, there were one or two leaps that had to be made to get from the movie to the show originally. I’m content to treat them somewhat separately.

The difficulty is going to be when they start releasing SG-1 or Atlantis movies. That’s when the general public is going to get confused, I think.
