Video: Photosynth demo – awakening to the true power of the web

TED | Talks | Blaise Aguera y Arcas: Jaw-dropping Photosynth demo (video)

Click through. Now. Read the rest of this when you get back. Just don’t forget to come back. (FYI: you may have problems behind a firewall… I did)

This is one of the biggest breakthroughs in collective consciousness, collaboration, and visual relationships I can think of. Seriously, this is an amazing tool.

The first tool, Seadragon, is impressive enough. Amazing, smooth, manipulation of . . . → Read More: Video: Photosynth demo – awakening to the true power of the web

Interviewing for creativity

In the e-Learning Guild‘s discussion community, the concept of using stories for training is being covered. At one point, Christy Tucker noted that at a previous job she had worked with a person who had been a high school English teacher and was very good at creative writing. She really appreciated his skills in creating a story to engage the learner and push the concepts through. She then made the point that you didn’t have . . . → Read More: Interviewing for creativity

Media and technology issues for learning and persuasion

The Tech Effect | LeadershipJournal.net

The issues of how – and whether – to integrate technology into training go beyond the borders of corporate training or academia. The same issues confront other professions as well, such as pastoring a church, as covered in the article linked above. I was struck, as I read through the article, at how similar the issues are, in fact. How do you reach the balance of visual vs. auditory vs. . . . → Read More: Media and technology issues for learning and persuasion

Jedi training in Philly

Wizard Entertainment

The “New York Jedi” are making a stop at the “Wizard World” convention in Philadelphia this coming weekend. They’ll even train people on sword choreography! Sounds like a fun time. That’s almost enough to get me to drive out there and get my geek on.

The New York Jedi, a group of costumers, performers, actors & non-actors, and martial artists who have a particular passion for sword fighting with light sabers (not real . . . → Read More: Jedi training in Philly

Mind Map of Learning Technologies

Nothing new going on here. I created the map for a project at work, and I wanted to test out the embedding plugin bubbl.us has for WordPress.

So, for what it’s worth, here is a draft of my talking points for presenting some Learning Technology ideas to my team (click on the map and drag to move it, or zoom in using the wheel on your mouse or the controls in the upper-left of the . . . → Read More: Mind Map of Learning Technologies

Podcasting for learning Podcast

The MASIE Center – Learning Lab & ThinkTank – PodCasting for Learning Call

I’m listening right now to this podcast. It’s got a slow start, but there are some good ideas in there. For example, around the 10 or 15 minute mark, they give some ideas for ways to use training podcasts. One example was a tour that a national park was giving. Tourists can download a tour that you stop and start as you . . . → Read More: Podcasting for learning Podcast

Collaborative Storyboarding

Why Collaborative Storyboard Technology Is Mission Critical

This is an excellent article extolling the virtues of collaboration for storyboarding your courses (and a little push for storyboarding itself). It doesn’t specifically promote a single commercial product, though it does highlight XStream Software’s tool at the end, but rather focuses on the generic benefits of collaboration in the Instructional Designer/Subject Matter Expert interaction.

I’m an easy sell for this kind of thing, but it certainly sold . . . → Read More: Collaborative Storyboarding

Teaching money management to kids

The Simple Dollar » The Money Savvy Pig and My Son’s Allowance

Another good idea from Trent, over at The Simple Dollar. A transparent, compartmentalized, piggybank does seem like a good way to teach money management to young kids. His plan hits the major keys of teaching: Tell, Show, Do, Review.

Obviously he’ll have to tell his son what he’s doing. Then he will show him what it looks like as the savings build. Though . . . → Read More: Teaching money management to kids

Making MP3s playable on a website, the easy way

[update: I've since started using the Anarchy plugin, which also makes standard hyperlinks playable, and though I'm on the fence about which technology I like better for audio (I got Anarchy for the video component), I lean toward the method described below because it's less visually intrusive. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to disable the Anarchy audio player segment without disabling the whole thing, so all the example links below (and throughout this site . . . → Read More: Making MP3s playable on a website, the easy way

What I’ve been thinking

I’ve been quiet on here for a couple weeks due to some time pressures. Lots to do during the lead-up to Christmas, as I’m sure you can all understand. I had it all planned out – a full week of vacation to get it all done – but then some problems at work forced me to give up most of my “free” time. The week after Christmas was spent running around to stores with gift . . . → Read More: What I’ve been thinking
